Safely close a construction site

Commercial construction site

If you need or are required to shut down a construction site temporarily, there are several steps you can follow to protect your property and help ensure your work site is in good condition when it’s time to restart the project.

Work site security

  • Evaluate fencing and site entry points to minimize the risk for vandalism and theft.
  • Ensure only authorized personnel have access to entry points and proper signage is in place.
  • Consider adding CCTV, motion sensors or other remote monitoring if onsite personnel is not viable.
  • Assess the lighting at the work site and ensure that it remains well-lit.

Storage

  • Secure and protect all stored materials needed for the project – both on and off site.
  • Make alternative delivery arrangements as the situation warrants.
  • Inventory items prior to shutting down and then on a regular schedule.
  • Relocate valuable items, including tools, materials and equipment to a more highly secured area.

Fire prevention

  • Review the site’s fire safety and emergency procedures.
  • Verify fire and smoke alarms are in proper working order.
  • Discard trash and unnecessary materials prior to shutting down.

Site exposure

  • Investigate any temporary structures that are incomplete for stability, i.e. falsework, shoring, temporary bracing, etc.
  • Ensure all structural connections are stable.
  • Consult with project architects and engineers for any and all unfinished connections.
  • Assess and stabilize all equipment with regards to manufacturer advice, i.e. cranes, rigging/lifting equipment.

Water damage and flood prevention

  • Ensure domestic water supply is turned off at the source (where possible). This should include all other non-essential utilities.
  • Assess the condition of the structure to verify water is not able to enter externally, i.e. roof, coverings, doors, windows, etc.
  • Ensure proper grading for water and the drainage system operates as intended.
  • Review the site’s flood safety and emergency procedures as necessary.

Emergency procedures

  • Review all emergency procedures onsite.
  • Safely shut down all operating equipment onsite.
  • Communicate all necessary information to contractors and site personnel.

Additional hazards

  • Evaluate other facilities and properties around the site that may impact construction.
